The SEM invites paper proposals for their first biennial workshop, "Modernist Reconstructions" at the 57th Annual Congress of the Société des Anglicistes de l'Enseignement Supérieur (SAES), which will be held in Reims, June 1-3, 2017, on the theme of (Re)construction(s). The workshop will comprise six twenty-minute papers.

Potential contributors should refer to the descriptive framework for the SAES Congress which provides the larger backdrop for our specific workshop:

The SEM places particular interest this year in the interactions of war and reconstruction within modernist texts, which often expose what war is as a way of offering reconstruction to readers. Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, Pound's A Memoir of Gaudier-Brzeska, the war-time and postwar works of Ivor Gurney, Robert Graves, Edith Sitwell, H.D., and David Jones expose the brutality of war — yet reach a distance from the site as a way of offering reconstruction and even healing. Of course this kind of modernist writing is not limited to authors who speak about World War I. Every war eats away at language, and modernist writers take special care to reconstruct the power of words, often while war still rages.

Those interested should send a short bio-description along with a 150-200 word abstract to Jennifer Kilgore-Caradec by January 15, 2017 (jkilgorecaradec@gmail.com).

Please note that participants who are not already members of the Société d'Etudes Modernistes will be asked to join.
